The Supreme Court of the United States, in a case 2 years ago, determined that the Second Amendment to the Constitution should now be interpreted as meaning that individuals have the right to arm themselves in their own homes. Previously, the Court had interpreted the amendment to mean that the right to have a gun was limited to militias. The case, now known as "The Heller Decision," applied only to the District of Columbia, which had very restrictive gun ownership laws.
In June, 2010, the Court, in a case now known as The McDonald Case," brought against the City of Chicago, restricted private gun ownership by residents of Chicago. The 5-4 decision expanded gun rights to the states as well. The Court did agree in both cases that some restrictions remained against gun owning by convicted felons, the mentally ill and youth under certain ages. The tests will now come as laws in all states that restrict guns in any way are challenged by lawyers for the NRA, shooting and sports clubs and gun manufacturers.
