ABOUT WAGV: History

Women Against Gun Violence grew out of a national seminar that articulated guns and gun violence as a women's issue. This seminar was held in Los Angeles and co-coordinated by then-Los Angeles Police Commissioner Ann Reiss Lane. Women Against Gun Violence brought together women's organizations in recognition of the leadership roles women have historically taken on important community issues, particularly those affecting children. With the involvement of women and their families, Women Against Gun Violence hoped to change the climate of the debate on gun violence by working with elected officials, survivors and communities.

Since its inception in 1993, Women Against Gun Violence has worked to end the tolerance of gun violence by educating our communities about the human, public health, and financial consequences of this epidemic. We call attention to gun violence as a public health crisis through our public education programs, media advocacy, coalition building and resource support to policymakers. Women Against Gun Violence encourages everyone to take action to reduce gun availability, educates the community on safe gun ownership, and trains survivors on ways to mobilizes communities against gun violence. We concentrate on providing residents with the educational resources needed to rid their communities of one of the leading killers of children in California: gun violence.
